A Glimpse into Porcelain´s Recent History

Like calligraphy, or any other art, porcelain making is organic, ever changing. Still. Antique porcelain has a reputation for setting record prices at international auctions. The value of a piece lies as much in its age as in its intrinsic beauty. It's a beauty that may appear a little bit too intricate for modern tastes.
Nonetheless antique porcelain never fails to charm with its dreamy colors and vivid imagery.
A chance to take a closer look at some antique porcelain - at Beijing's Oriental Art Exhibition Center. The pieces on display - there are one hundred of them - cover a period spanning a hundred years, from the early nineteenth century to the early twentieth century.
Their relative newness - on the scale of antiques - means these porcelains have been well taken care of. None has endured years of being lost and buried underground.
All the pieces are in mint condition. Although the covers are missing from a couple of jars, the rest are extremely well preserved. And the majority have colors as fresh as the day they were first painted - this alone can keep collectors riveted.
