A Glimpse into Porcelain´s Recent History

Chen Liehan, oganizer, said, "All of the exhibits you see here have previously been transported back from Europe. The story behind each piece we have no way of knowing. But for me, even to look at them is a bliss simply because they are so beautiful.

Many of them are being shown to the public here in China for the very first time. And eighty percent of the exhibits are the only remaining examples of its type; known to us."

Looking at them, you are staring directly into an era when the definition for an object of beauty was much simpler than it is now. And those who worked with porcelain had not yet picked up the ego and whimsy of the "artiste". Instead, they treated their craft exactly as what it was: to create objects to serve a useful purpose and to give them art and beauty.

That doesn't mean the works want for imagination. They are abundant in "collective imagination" rooted in popular folklore. And there one discovers that dual world -- of the artist having an individual perspective and the iconic images of his era.
