V N Singh, director of Government Art Museum, Chandigarh, said, "Basically lithos are stone paintings done in the 19th and 20th century. And this is a very important exhibition because about 200 years have been depicted on litho prints and most of the prints I've seen, they are very good and they are of very high quality."

Most of the lithographs here, were done in black and white. Some show lighter shades of color. In the age of electronics, these old images seem to have lost their appeal for many people.

This exhibition hopes to bring superior quality print art back to the fore.

B N Goswamy, art historian, said, "Prints have always been undervalued in our culture. They have been generally seen to be of passing interest. But the high quality of some of these prints, engraving the writings and so on, it's something which one has started slowly to value. They are not only documents of the past but are also artistically very superior products."

A study done not long ago reveals that lithography, for all its value and uniqueness, appears on a path inevitably to extinction.
