The works of ancient Chinese scholars can be seen locally in an exhibit billed as the “Gems of Cultural Antiquities” at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila and at the National Museum of the Philippines.

“We are glad to bring the arti- facts of the old China here in the Philippines,” said Chen Yongshan, cultural counsellor of Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Manila. “Promoting our culture is one of the main reasons why we brought this exhibition here.”

“Due to good relationship of China and the Philippines we are proud to present this collection of art through the Executive Program Character Agreement,” he added.

The show, which will run until the end of February 2008, displays artifacts like authentic ink sticks, brush holders (bitongs), ink stones, brush rests, seals, porcelain jars and plates, paintings and calligraphies all relating to the life of a Chinese scholar. Most of the collections on display are from the Yuan Dynasty (1271 A.D. to 1368 A.D.), Ming Dynasty (1368 A.D. to 1644 A.D.) and Qing Dynasty (1644 A.D. to 1911 A.D.).
