The traditional Chinese scholar is one who has spent years studying, researching and analysing the classics and philosophical treatises of China while adhering to the principles and teachings of Confucius, said Gari Apolonio, education officer of the Metropolitan Museum.

Any Chinese who wants to attain the elite status of a scholar must pass the rigid civil service examination, Apolonio added. By passing this exam, one would be able to enter government service, which allows them to help others through their high degree of knowledge.

A Chinese official was particularly proud of an “interesting” piece on display—the Chinese pillow made of porcelain. This traditional head support is unique because its material is smooth yet hard in texture. This kind of pillow is widely used in Song, Jin and Yuan dynasties, according to exhibit display. It has a tiger design, considered as a powerful creature that the Chinese believe keeps evil away during sleep. Besides porcelain, wood and bamboo were also used for this kind of pillow.

“We are looking for more partnership and bringing more exhibitions here in the Philippines,” Chen said. “Also, we expect the Philippine group to attend the ninth Asean Art Festival in Central China next year from September to October,” he added. “This would bring both countries closer by learning and experiencing each other’s culture.”
